Featured Interview of Handmade Treasures: Deb of Paxton Valley Folk Art

Deb of Paxton Valley Folk Art has graced this blog since its inception. She makes all sorts of delightful handmade goodies, specializing in folk art painting, sewn ornies, bowl fillers, and much more!
Do you have any favorite medium? Is there anything you eventually want to get in to and master?
My favourite medium is paint, I am working mainly in acrylic paint now but love watercolours as well. I took watercolour painting classes a few years ago and would love to get back to them; watercolours are so beautiful, I love the ethereal look you can achieve in that medium.

What kinds of artistic projects do you like to work on?
I love creating my epatterns; I'm no seamstress by a long shot so figuring out how to sew what I am imagining in my mind can be a challenge! But I love the process and love watching my ideas come to life.

What do you like to do in your spare time when you're not creating art?
We live out in the country and are surrounded by forests and mountains, so anything that takes me out into the wilderness is my idea of heaven! Hiking, camping, cross country skiing, I love it all and am so very lucky to be able escape to the wild whenever I want or need to!

How long have you been crafting?
I started crafting in the 80's; started out with cross-stitching then got hooked on watching Aleene and Carol Duval on TV and through them tried many different types of crafts and mediums. I still have some VCR tapes of their shows, boy have times changed!

When did you first start selling your handmade items? What inspired you to do so?
I started selling my crafts at a local craft mall about 15 years ago after everyone that I was giving my crafts to as gifts kept saying "You should be selling this stuff"! Actually, they were probably just saying that so that I'd stop giving them handmade gifts year after year LOL! [Nooo, Deb! I'm quite sure they were truly delighted at receiving something you made with your talented and artistic hands!] I started selling online at eBay and Etsy about 5 years ago and started up my selling blog last year.

What style do you decorate your home in?
Early hand me downs LOL! We live a very casual lifestyle with lots of critters in the house so decorating is not high on my priority list. I guess country casual with a very strong helping of primitive would come closest to describing our home.

Were you artistic as a child?
I really enjoyed sketching when I was young, especially animals as I was (and still am!) mad about animals. I don't think that I was especially talented but I enjoyed the creative outlet. I don't remember doing real well in art classes at school but I was always an enthusiastic participant!

Did anyone inspire you as a child or when you were starting to become artistic?
I didn't know anyone who was "artistic" when I was young, no one in my family was involved in arts or crafts as I was growing up. But as I started to explore my artistic side in the '80's, I took a class in tole painting from a local artist here in Kamloops and she was very encouraging and pushed me to continue painting and to create my own art. I have to thank her for giving me that push because I don't know if I would have continued without her encouragement.

Was there a point when you realized "Wow, I'm an artist/artisan!"
I think that moment came for me when I finished one of my first epatterns "Crows In The Cornfield". It was one of my first original designs and when it was completed I said to myself "You done good girl, you are an artist after all!" It was a great feeling and for me a great accomplishment.

Confession time: What does your craft room/studio really look like? Is it organized?
Hah! My craft room always looks like a bomb has exploded in it! But regardless of how cluttered and disorganized it looks, I always know where everything is. I continue working until the time comes when I have covered every conceivable surface with paint bottles, brushes, fabric, patterns, etc, etc, etc and don't have a clear space to work in anymore! Then I spend a day putting everything back where it should be and start the process all over again LOL! It may not be a very efficient way to work but as the saying goes "I'm not messy, I'm creative"!

Featured Artisan of Handmade Treasures: Diane MacNaughtan of Dianie Mac Designs

Do you have any favorite medium?
CLAY! Any kind of clay, I would be lost without it!

Is there anything you eventually want to get in to and master?
I am always curious and love to try new mediums. But, there is one thing I have always wanted to do, that is learn to sew. I would love to make those wonderful cloth dolls.

What kinds of artistic projects do you like to work on?
Most of my designs are Halloween or Christmas themed. Ornaments are always a favorite of mine to create.

What do you like to do in your spare time when you're not creating art?
In my spare time I love to spend time with family on weekend outings such as camping and fishing. I also love going to garage sales, finding junk and re-purposing it!

How long have you been crafting?
I have been creating ever since I can remember.

When did you first start selling your handmade items?
Well, if cake decorating counts, I was selling homemade and decorated cakes at the age of 11.

What inspired you to do so?
My Dad! lol.. He saw that I had talent in my decorating and he started keeping me busy decorating cakes for his friends and co-workers. I became too busy for a pre-teen and burned out. lol...

What style do you decorate your home in?
I love many styles.. my home is an eclectic mix of antiques, Tuscan, Prim and what I call Granny style.

Were you artistic as a child?
Extremely!

Did anyone inspire you as a child or when you were starting to become artistic?
When I was about 5 or 6, my mom gave me a book on Leonardo Da Vincci.. I was so fascinated with his work.

I was also inspired by a local artist, then in his teen years he was locally famous. Now he is a world renowned artist. His Name is Ned Young. When I was young, I would walk right past Ned's house on my way to school. He had a studio in his back yard that his parents had built for him and I would daydream about having my own studio in which to create my art in, one day.

Was there a point when you realized "Wow, I'm an artist/artisan!"
I knew when I was very, very young that I was an artist. I also felt very different from the other kids.

Confession time: What does your craft room/studio really look like?
It is YELLOW.. too yellow..lol. However, it is in the middle of a transformation. I am giving my studio a re-do in a French shabby chic style.

Is it organized?
Yes, it is organized, I have a place for everything, but it gets messy. It is an organized mess!

Featured Artisan of Handmade Treasures: Cathy of TolenTreasures

In order for you to get to know our artisans of handmade goods, I'll post an interview from time to time. Today's interview is of Cathy from TolenTreasures! I've featured many of her handmade tole painting products throughout various posts here.
Question: Do you have a favorite medium? Is there anything you eventually want to get in to and master?

Answer: Acrylics for right now. I recently joined the local art association in an effort to explore some new mediums. Watercolor has always fascinated me, but I have never been happy with my experimentations in it.

Question: What kinds of artistic projects do you like to work on?

Answer: Big projects with lots of detail in my painting. I love to "futz" around with blending, color and detail. So much of my painting is fast and for profit, that I don't take the time to just paint for enjoyment.

Question: What do you like to do in your spare time when you're not creating art?

Answer: Grandchildren. Working at my real job. Sometimes the two simultaneously, which accounts for why I need to sit and paint. Cheap Therapy.

Question: How long have you been crafting?

Answer: All my life. My Mom would make sure that we got a craft every year for Christmas. It was a tradition that I carried on with my own girls.

Question: When did you first start selling your handmade items? What inspired you to do so?

Answer: When my girls were little and I was a stay at home Mom, I started doing some local shows and selling sewn items. Really, before that and this sounds crazy, but I made gowns for an entire wedding party when I was in 10th grade.

Question: What style do you decorate your home in?

Answer: Rural Country Thrift Shop with some Flea Market Accents.

Question: Were you artistic as a child?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Did anyone inspire you as a child or when you were starting to become artistic?

Answer: My Mom and Dad were and still always are making something. I remember my Mom getting the Fad of the Month club and making things from it and of course the sewing machine was a permanent fixture in the dining room. Dad has always been a whittler and wood carver. My maternal grandmother knitted and crocheted and passed that on to me. My paternal grandmother was a beautiful quilter, but passed away while I was young. I would have loved to have learned more from her.

Question: Was there a point when you realized "Wow, I'm an artist/artisan!"

Answer: Still waiting for that AHA moment. [Trust me, Cathy; you are!!]

Question: Confession time: What does your craft room/studio really look like? Is it organized?

Answer: I have a painting room, a sewing room, basecoat/varnish in the basement and hand sew and knit in the living room. Everything is a disaster and I have a very patient, saintly husband.

Question: Where can people find out more about you and your handmade tole painting and treasures for sale?

Answer: TolenTreasures Blog; TolenTreasures Depot, and Tolentreasures on Facebook.

Perfectly Prim Link Party

I haven't seen a link party which is devoted to showing off people's prims, so I decided to make one. Today - and for the next several days - I'll be having the Prairie Patch's first ever perfectly prim link party. It's my plan to do this on a weekly basis, though the first party will last a little longer. Following week's may have specific themes, but this first one will be anything you want to show off that's prim-related.

This will be a great way for those of you who are artisans of prim decor goodies to show off your various prims. It's also a great way for those who love handmade crafts and home decor to show off their collection as well!

Eventually I'd like to have a link party here, connecting all of you amazing artisans with those who love purchasing handmade prim decor items.

So let's have some fun!!
